A Day In The Lakes
The first nights sleep is over
Today is Tuesday morn
Blue sky the sun is shining
With hoar frost on the lawn.
Yesterday we had no hot water
No milk, noisy toilet, hard bed
Today we’re feeling much brighter
Big breakfast, now we’ve been fed.
We venture out into the sunshine
The mountain peaks topped white with snow
Rucksacks and boots are both ready
Get walking poles then off we go.
Joan said she has woken up tired
So tired she felt she could weep
She said she had spent the last hours
Cleaning the house in her sleep.
Two coffees we had in the morning
I thought that should do for a while
But we stopped for a coffee at booths
We had walked less that half of a mile.
In the country we walked several hours
We were than told to stand and smile
But with Barbara working the camera
We knew it would take quite a while.
Joan felt that her knees were going
I could here the creak of her bones
Not with climbing up a mountain
But at the river skimming stones.
After several more hours of walking
My feet felt they’d travelled too far
Next time we can meet at the end
You walk and I’ll go by car.
