The Green Belt
Years ago when we were younger
And we were looking round
To find the perfect home
The present one we found.
We knew it was expensive
But were told one thing was true
The house was on a green belt
We would always have this view.
Being one who loves all nature
Wherever it may be
This house was what we wanted
Ideal for my wife and me.
In summer I look from my window
I can see the barley grow
Or in the depths of winter
See fox paw prints in the snow.
I have listened to the skylark
As it rises in the sky
Watched a myriad of starlings
Forming patterns up on high
Watched lapwing swoop and dive
To protect their young or nest
In autumn watched the falling leaves
As the trees prepare to rest.
But now we are in turmoil
Never thought we would see this day
The town ignores the green belt
Wants to take it all away.
To build a giant warehouse
We neither want nor need
The community have pleaded
The council failed to heed.
To make a better place
This is not the solution
To fill this neighbourhood
With noise and light pollution.
If we need a warehouse
If this plan is right
Don’t take it away our green belt
Put it on a brown field site
But will this council listen?
Why take all this away
As our houses drop in value
We are the ones who pay.
