The Challenge Cup

I remember my first trip to Wembley

St Helens and Wigan to see

Travel at five o'clock in the morning

Ninety five thousand and me.

The motorways hadn't been opened

The Chara decrepit and old

The forecast to be warm and sunny

But at five o'clock dark, damp and cold.

It seemed we had travelled for hours

I thought we were near the smoke

When we stopped for a drink and a sandwich

In a lay-by six miles south of Stoke.

The temperature rose into the eighties

The sun shining down hot and bright

And then you could feel the excitement

As the twin towers came into sight.

In awe I entered the stadium

Stood up, I hadn't a seat

The roof had not yet been built

To protect from the hot burning heat

The match was one to remember

As we stuffed it up on the pies

With a score by the king Alec Murphy

And Van Voll with the greatest of tries.

The day I will never forget

The magic, excitement and fun

Fifteen hours of riding in't chara'

And four hours burning in't sun.
