The 20 Pence Piece

I’ve decided now’s the time

To put my thoughts in verse

Of the time when all was not right

Within Joan’s handbag purse.

She checked through Brenda’s list

And all her change was there

Plus an extra 20p

She never has one spare

She started then to panic

The list was checked and checked again

Yet still she had this coin

Which went against the grain.

She decided not to spend it

She did not give it me

But left it in the kitchen

On the caddy holding tea.

It’s since been on the table

And underneath the door

On the coffee and the sugar

And on the kitchen floor.

I have found it in the wash bowl

In the drawer on a spoon

Unless I take some action

It will be in the breakfast soon.

So, Joan, if you want to use it

Save, spend it or discard

I’ve put it on the mantel piece

Beside your birthday card.
