Reflections
Time to relax, it’s Christmas Eve
Shopping has been done,
Presents lie beneath the tree
Children to bed have gone.
Time to reflect in silence
Sitting by the fire
A moments quiet solitude
`Till I myself retire
The smell of turkey fills the room
Of onions and sage,
My memory is racing back
To an early age.
When I was young, excitement
Filled the Christmas air
Ears pricked to hear Santa
Walking up the stair.
Of the happy times we had
A close knit family
Of presents, parties, laughter
And a real Christmas tree.
A tiny tear falls down my check
It will never be the same,
I have visions of lost loved ones
Dancing in the flame.
Let’s come back to the present
And hear the children say
‘Thank you Mum and Thank you Dad
For a lovely Christmas Day’.
Let’s hope in twenty years time
When they stare at the ember
The flames will not roll away the years
This Christmas they’ll remember
